After Alpha, what’s Next?

After Alpha, what’s Next?

After Alpha, what’s Next?

After AlphaThere is no doubt the Alpha Course is an amazing program that has connected thousands of people around the world with the Christian Faith and introduced them to Jesus.

The question is, after Alpha, what’s next?

  • How do you grow your new believer to the next level?
  • How do help your new believer grow strong in their faith and become grounded in the word?
  • How do they apply the Bible to their everyday way of life?
  • How do you free them demonic bondages and past hurts?
  • How do you raise them up as leaders and disciplers of others?

harvest of soulsIn 2000 when I was co-leading Intercessors for Melbourne, I woke in the early hours of the morning with a sense that

God was saying to me

God “quantify what does an outpouring of My Spirit look like from a numbers point of view,” I got up and pulled out a calculator and started to punch in some numbers.

This is the result

At the time, Melbourne and the surrounding areas had a population of 3.5 million people

  • consisted of 31 municipalities
  • 3% of Melbourne’s population were Christians, i.e. 105,000 people in Melbourne professed to be Christians
  • Who fellowshipped in one of the 1500 recognised churches in Melbourne
  • If we averaged numbers over the 1500 churches, it meant each church had a congregation of 70 people

And let’s say each municipality on average had 48 churches within its boundaries and God poured out His spirit on just 20 % of Melbourne’s lost:

  • 697,000 new converts would flood the churches throughout Melbourne
  • If we averaged that over each municipality
  • we would have 21,903 new converts to disciple, and on average
  • each church would have 456 new converts to nurture and disciple

“What has that to do with me?”

you may be asking yourself.
If we are standing on the brink of a major outpouring of Gods Spirit that will touch thousands across this nation, what tools and materials have you got to clean up the coming harvest?
Most will be totally “unchurched” and will find it difficult to connect

Welsh Revival

90% of the population in Wales during the Welsh Revival were touched by God and professed to be followers of Jesus, yet sadly 10 years later there was very little evidence of the revival in Wales

We decided to act

This was one of the reasons that prompted myself, Carl John Fechner to write the Growing Deep and Strong® Series.

How to Unlock the Bible for a New Christian

How to Unlock the Bible for a New Christian

Unlock the BibleHave you noticed how new Christians have trouble reading the Bible?

You can ask them to turn to John 3:16, one of the most well known and quoted Bible verses and you find them staring back at you with a blank look on their face.

Today’s new Christian believers are coming into their Christian faith from an unchurched background and have great difficulty understanding how to read the Bible.

They are embarrassed

EmbarrassedAt the age of 42, I had a very powerful encounter with God and knew that I would be a follower of Jesus Christ for the rest of my life.

However, coming from an unchurched background and the mistaken belief that Churches were for funerals and weddings I found it a very daunting experience and at times embarrassing when it was just taken for granted that I could just pick up the Bible and begin reading and understand the content.

They struggle

struggleJust like most of your new Christians I really struggled and failed to understand the context of how it is written and how it is a magnificent road map on how to live life to the fullest.

I came from a very successful business and managerial background and at times I felt very inadequate when it came to this whole new experience.

My wife and I were very worldly and had basically broken every one of the ten commandments and our new Christian faith was polar opposite to our world view and we needed to unlearn everyone of our beliefs and align our lifestyle to the Word of God.

Understanding the Bible

understanding the bibleI knew the answers were in the Bible, but it was daunting trying to quickly learn God’s and apply it to how we should be living our everyday life according to His word.

You will find most new Christians don’t understand the Bible and after a while it becomes not much more than another book on the shelf collecting dust and they go back to their old way of life and never really grow and mature in their faith.

God was so gracious to me as I went on a journey of trying to understand how to apply the Bible to my walk while on earth.

I have almost every version of the Bible on my bookshelf, but the one that changed my life the most was the NKJV Spirit Filled Life Study Bible, although it is NKJV version, it was the study notes and the footnotes etc. from some 50 well respected Bible Scholars that helped me understand how to apply the Bible to my everyday walk.

Unlock the Bible with an intentional Discipleship path

If you want to help new Christians from an unchurched background its important that you take them on a journey through the Bible from their world view perspective without compromising the integrity of God’s word, the Bible.

How to Unlock the Bible for new Christians

new ChristiansMyself and others have spent 36,000 hours over a 5-year period creating an off the shelf, easy to use, simple to understand, intentional Christian Discipleship path that takes a new Believer from a pagan background to a small group leader in 12 months or less.

How to disciple the fringe dwellers in your church

How to disciple the fringe dwellers in your church

How to disciple the fringe dwellers in your church

churchComing from a large church, we found that we had a group of people who were having trouble connecting into home groups. (some 75 people)
Most of them came from a low socio-economic background or had very broken backgrounds.

This is what worked for us

The first thing we did was invite people in the church who desired to touch the lives of others yet hadn’t found a place to express that within the church, what I call bright eyes and had a passion to disciple others.

The next thing we did was invite the 75 to a free pizza night, (35 turned up) after pizza and fellowship we presented the video, Behind the Scenes and then introduced them to module one of the Growing Deep and Strong Series.

From this the 35 agreed to meet weekly for pizza, fellowship and discuss what they had learnt from that week’s session.

After nine weeks we ran the Encounter One Weekend and to say that lives were transformed is an understatement.

The success of the Growing Deep and Strong Series in helping to transform lives and help them reconnect back into society and the church was amazing.

Strategies of a religious spirit

Strategies of a religious spirit

Strategies of a religious spirit

religious spiritThrough the centuries a religious spirit has relentlessly attacked and paralysed thousands of churches, ruined countless numbers of lives. And unfortunately it has invaded many of the church’s and denominations operating today.

A religious spirit insidiously attacks God’s people and His church. It drains the life and power out of the church and out of God’s people. It causes people to be more concerned about keeping the rules, the rituals and traditions than they are about heart issues and heeding the things of the spirit. Matthew 15:7-9.

Previous Revivals

Previous RevivalsI am not going to name them, but if you do your own research you will find most denominational groups that operate on earth today are the residue of very powerful moves of God.

They still display a form of godliness but without the power of the Holy Spirit that operated through the leaders at that time in history.

Our greatest threat to the Third Great Awakening

Third Great Awakening
One of the greatest threats to the third great awakening and what some have termed as the coming reformation will be the religious spirit. In every previous move of God it has viciously attacked those involved.

The Pentecostal and Charismatic movement are two of the most recent moves of God and history shows how those involved were viciously attacked and ridiculed.

Yet history reveals that both were a Holy Spirit revival that “revived” the church and had a major impact on society.

Sadly today, both have lost a lot of the power they once had and in many ways have succumbed to a form of religious activities like many other denominational groups

If what I have written offends you, then the greatest caution I can give you is to make sure that you haven’t fallen into the clutches of this insidious spirit.

Of all the demons in Satan’s Kingdom, the religious spirit is the greatest threat to the imminent move of God because it operates within the walls of “Churchianity,” that is, powerless church’s and denominations.

The strategy of the religious spirit

religious spiritEvery prophecy indicates the coming reformation is unlike any other move of God, and to many it will offend their religious mindsets. The chances are that it will be very different to what you have been accustomed to and unwittingly you may find yourself fighting what the Holy Spirit is doing. This has happened in every previous move of God, some of those within the church walls attacked what they thought was the devil was in fact God.

I am sure that you don’t want to be one of those opposing the Holy Spirit, so here is a simple test for you.

As you read through the following statements and read the relevant Bible verses, acknowledge whatever you feel applies to your life.

A number of these may indicate that there is a religious spirit operating in your life. Listen for the Holy Spirit’s promptings as I read through the list.

  • God is seen as harsh, judgmental, distant, detached. Colossians 2:8
  • Live out of unbelief, doubt miracles and assume that there is a natural or rational explanation. John 9:15 & 16.
  • Observe religious rules, traditions and rituals, instead of listening and submitting to the Holy Spirit. Matthew 23:27 & 28.
  • Be legalistic in the way they worship, pray, etc. through ritual. Matthew 23:15. Worship and pray out of selfish motives, with a desire to receive praise or adulation, to sound impressive. Luke 18:9-14.
  • Be judgmental. The inclination is to put others down because of their spiritual or moral failure. The motive is often to exalt self. Matthew 7:1-5.
  • Believe that one must be cleaned up before one can come to God.
    1 Timothy 1:12-15.
  • Unable to receive forgiveness. 1 John 1:9.
  • Be unforgiving. Matthew 6:15.
  • Believe that God’s approval is earned through self-effort. Galatians 2:16.
  • Be a perfectionist. Matthew 11:16-19.
  • Pray from the intellect rather than the spirit. Matthew 6:7.
  • Be “turned off” by the expression of emotions in worship and reject spiritual manifestations you don’t understand. 2 Samuel 6:14-16.
  • Give intellectual assent to Biblical and spiritual truth, but not put it into practice.
    Matthew 7:26 & 27.
  • Be unwilling and unable to see the truth, Matthew 13:14 & 15, particularly about the Holy Spirit. Matthew 12:24 & 28.
  • Pervert and twist the truth. 2 Timothy 4:3 & 4.
  • Substitute traditions of men for the truth of God. Matthew 15:3.
  • Be hypocritical. Outwardly religious but inwardly corrupt. Matthew 23:3.
  • Be self-righteous, proud and arrogant. Luke 16:14 & 15).
  • Hate spiritual correction. Proverbs 5:12.
  • Have a loose attitude toward sin. 2 Peter 2:18-20.
  • Avoid real repentance for sin through godly sorrow. Matthew 27:3-5.
  • Fight spiritual battles with the world’s weapons. We must wage war in the spirit. Ephesians 6:12-18.
  • Persecute and slander those who move in the Spirit. Acts 13:44 &45.
  • Try to stop those who are coming out of their old religious tradition to follow the Lord Jesus. Acts 9:1 & 2.
  • Have contempt for non-believers. Acts 11:2 & 3.
  • Have shame and self-contempt. The focus is on ourselves and our own worthlessness. Shuts out the possibility of focusing on God’s redemption. John 6:37.
  • Stir up strife among people. Acts 13:49 & 50.
  • Have a tendency to see that our primary mission is to tear down what we believe is wrong. John 12:9-11.
  • Desire to be in control. Fear of losing control.  We feel like falling apart when we are not in control.
  • Cause people to focus on self-imposed and external religion rather than on the Holy Spirit’s work in them. Colossians 2:20-23.

Religious Spirit Prayer

Religious Spirit PrayerIf you have “ticked” and said yes to any of the above, here is a simple prayer to pray.

Heavenly Father, I come boldly before throne of grace with confidence and I repent and renounce every opening, known or unknown, I personally have given to a religious spirit. I ask for Your forgiveness.

Lord, I hold up my checklist before You, and I repent and renounce everything that I have “ticked” on the sheet.

I renounce and break the hold of the religious spirit over my life and refuse to allow it to steal my intimate relationship with Jesus Christ and the freedom of the Holy Spirit to move in my life.

Lord Jesus, I nail these to the cross, I thank You for Your forgiveness that You have freely given me, and I ask You, Holy Spirit, to fill that part of my life which was occupied by the religious spirit. Holy Spirit, as Jesus said in John 14:13, you will lead and guide me into all truth.

Amen.

The Power of Words we Speak

The Power of Words we Speak

The Power of Words we Speak

The Power of Words we SpeakThe words we speak are incredibly powerful! They can be either powerfully negative, or powerfully positive. They can either destroy or build up. Our spoken words can have amazing results, good or bad, and God’s word is also amazingly powerful—for good.

This verse shows that our words not only affect the person we speak to, but also it produces either life or death in us. To speak death is to talk negatively all the time, to complain, or to speak words of defeat.

Words slip out of our mouths, and then we can’t take them back once they have been spoken. It’s like trying to pick up the pillow full of feathers once they have been scattered to the wind. Every one of us has regretted some of the things we have said. We have thought, “I wish I hadn’t said that!” or, “I’ll never say that again!” or similar. Or what parent has not said to a child, “You must learn to control your tongue!”

To speak life means to speak how God would speak about any issue.

There is a common saying, “Clothes make the man.” And there is some truth in that saying. Someone once said, “We are clothed by the words we speak.” Everyone knows us by the sort of clothes we wear, whether they are literal or whether they are the words we speak. Pretty well all of us are very sensitive to the words of others.

We thrive when we are affirmed and encouraged, but cutting remarks devastate us, and we try to cope with life without showing outwardly how words have destroyed us on the inside.

Parents may have said, “You were a mistake.” “You’re hopeless!” You idiot!” “You’ll never do any good!” or, “ Why can’t you be like your brother/sister?” or similar comments.

They may not even realise the damage that those comments caused the child. They adversely affect the child right into adulthood. In reality, they amount to curses spoken unwittingly over their children.

A little rhyme children sometimes use in an attempt to protect themselves goes like this. “ Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me.” This may sound very brave, but unfortunately it is not true. Some people have been so devastated by the words of others that the whole of their lives are in ruins.

The tragedy is that the other people may be completely unaware of the destruction their words have inflicted. Most of us can look back and remember how words spoken by others have deeply wounded us. The problem is that we are left with the scars in our soul. We have to cope with their effects left behind in our lives, often many years later.

We need to be healed of the effects of destructive words spoken either to us or by us. We cannot just ignore them because they continue to do their deadly work. And God is the One who knows how to heal those scars.

Good News

Good NewsBut there is another side to the picture. And this is the good news! Our words also have incredible power to build up and heal. That is why we need to become aware of what we speak and allow God to help us change destructive habits of speech that come with us from the old life before we knew Jesus.

We can learn to speak life to others, and we want to look at how we can do that later in this session. We have a choice whether we use our words as an instrument for speaking life or death, and in that choice, we also determine what fruit grows in our lives.

Maybe the Holy Spirit has been revealing negative words you may have spoken, about yourself, others, or your circumstances. If he reveals anything to you, don’t feel condemned by it, or feel that nothing can change.

There is something that you can do about it! Also, ask the Holy Spirit about destructive words that have been spoken to you and wounded you.

Changing the way we speak

So how do we change our old ways of talking?

Here are four steps.

1. REPENT

repentRepent of the negative words you have spoken. That means to stop excusing yourself. See your negative words as God sees them—that you are bringing death upon yourself. Ask His forgiveness for bringing negativity on yourself or others through the words you have spoken. Choose to forgive any who have wounded you by their words and ask God’s forgiveness for them.

2. RENOUNCE

renounceRenounce the consequences in your life of the words you have spoken, or others have spoken over you. Speak out loud that you will have nothing further to do with the old ways of talking, in Jesus’ name.

3. BREAK

breakBreak the effect of negative words—yours or others’—over your life. Speak that command out loud in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. As you do, the ties to those destructive words will be cut. That is the power of your words being put to good use.

4. SPEAK BLESSING

blessingSpeak blessings on yourself, on other people, and the circumstances you are in. You are releasing that blessing as you speak it out.

You may not change your old patterns of speech overnight. You may even fall back into old ways of talking from time to time without realizing it. But don’t be discouraged.

God is in the process of changing you. Holy Spirit will prompt you when what you have just said is not according to His ways. Again, don’t be condemned. Just use the four steps outlined above and step out of the negative consequences of the words you have spoken.

And ask God to help you change in that area. He will help you because He has promised to.

PRACTICAL STEPS

practical stepsHere are some practical steps that you can do to change. One thing you can do is to displace the store of negative things in your lives with the positive.

The best way to do that is to fill your mind with God’s Word, the Bible.

psalm 119 11The word hidden in this verse means to store up, to fill up the reserved space. So if there is a great store of God’s Word in our heart, that is what we will speak from. And we will reap the multiplied harvest of blessings—on us, as well as on others!
psalm 141 3If we have stored up God’s Word in our heart, we can use His Word as we talk with Him. That’s a great way of agreeing with God. For example, in relation to the power of our words, how about using Psalm 141:3 as a prayer?

No one is able to clearly discern his or her thoughts and intentions. But God has breathed life into the Bible, and He can speak to us about our true motives through it.

That’s why we need to store His Word up in our hearts. It can discern our motives before we talk with others, and prevent us from being trapped by our words. It can literally change the way we talk!

Before we speak to someone,

it would be good to ask ourselves the following questions:

  1. What will be the consequences of what I say? Positive or negative?
  2. Is there any hint of poison in what I want to say?
  3. Is what I am about to say going to encourage people, or discourage them?
  4. Will what I say help the person to grow, or will it have the opposite effect?
  5. How can I impart grace to the person who is listening?

Bible Verses

Here are some Bible verses that you can read just from the Psalms and the Proverbs to see something about what God says about the words we speak.

Psalm 15:1-3; 34:13; 37:30-31; 39:1; 119:13, 27, 46, 172; 120:2; 145:5-7,

Proverbs 4:24; 6:16-19; 10:11-14;19-21,32; 11:11-14; 12:6;13,14;17,18; 13:2-3; 15:1-7, 23, 26, 28; 16:21, 23, 24, 27, 28; 17:4, 7, 9, 20, 27, 28; 18:4, 6-8,13, 20, 21; 19:1, 28; 20:15, 21:23, 24:1-2, 6; 25:11,15, 23; 26:5, 20, 21-23, 28; 29:11, 20; 31:26.
